I reviewed pianist Yun-Chin Zhou for The Kansas City Star. The performance was a Harriman-Jewell Discovery concert, a free event. This was my first experience and I was wowed by the diversity of the audience, especially the children. The small girl next to me, stacked up on two throw pillows brought from home, followed the program meticulously, only once inadvertently adding some extraneous noises as she clinked her bejewel sneakers against the rail in front of her. One of the best audiences I’ve experience, though the Folly can be a forgiving space. The girl was also enamored by the grandeur of the concert hall – “it looks like a palace!” I enjoyed her rendition of the opening credits to “Frozen.”
