I reviewed the Kansas City Ballet’s final program of the season, “Hey-Hay, Going to Kansas City,” for The Kansas City Star. This was artistic director William Whitener’s final show, after 17 years with the company.
They performed the world premiere of Karole Armitage’s “Energy Made Visible,” with live improvisation from the legendary Bobby Watson, the KC premiere of Margo Sappington’s “Common People,” featuring William Shatner and Ben Folds’ spoken-word-rock album Has Been, and Donald McKayle’s 1930’s jazz-based “Hey-Hay, Going to Kansas City.”
