REVIEW for KCStar: Stefon Harris and Blackout

I reviewed Stefon Harris and Blackout for The Kansas City Star. They performed at the Gem Theater for the American Jazz Museum’s Jammin’ at the Gem series. This concert was also the part of the 18th & Vine Jazz Festival, featuring workshops and performances by middle school, high school and college ensembles.

I was surprised and delighted to catch the pre-show performance of the Metcalf OrffCats. They performed their program twice through and were a load of fun to watch. One groovy dude totally rocked out on the bass Orff, flipping his mallet as the audience cheered. I also enjoyed how the recorder chorus sneaked on stage during a pianissimo section and then let loose on their shrill backgrounds. Very, very fun!
