Review: Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s “Don Giovanni”

I reviewed Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s film noir version of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” for The Kansas City Star.

For a brief time, read the review here.

  1. I agree with nearly all of your review. I especially appreciated your observations regarding the execution of my favorite part of the whole opera: The cemetery and dinner scenes. Having the Commendatore in white and shoeless made him so much less threatening and just diluted the impact that is essential for that moment in the opera. Thanks for expressing MY frustration with the staging in your words. (I laughed about your lack of shoes comment) To me, it was an interesting, but failed, experiment in updating and left me wanting a more traditional approach.
